Gamma 5: What's New in Gamma AI, Access, and Alternatives (2026)

Gamma 5 is the newest version of Gamma, the AI presentation maker. Gamma released it on October 6, 2026, and calls it "the biggest product overhaul in our company's history."

This guide covers what changed, how the new agent builds a deck, and what happens to the old generator. It also explains who can use Gamma 5 today and which alternatives to compare. Every detail comes from Gamma's own pages and other vendors' pages, read on October 10, 2026.

What Gamma announced on October 6

The announcement post, "Introducing Gamma 5: Your Story, Your Style, Your Tools," carries Grant Lee's byline. It opens with a complaint about the category: "Everyone is sick of generic AI, including us."

The post argues that AI decks now look alike. It describes "the same wording, the same layouts, the same stock-looking imagery." Gamma 5 is the company's answer to that problem.

Gamma says it rebuilt the product "to create presentations that actually look like you and your brand." The same rebuild covers docs, social assets, and graphics. The post also says more than 100 million people have used Gamma to date.

This is not the first rebuild. The post says Gamma "began before modern AI" and was rebuilt around the first capable models. "This year, the ground shifted again," it says. The hard part is no longer producing a deck but producing one "that's actually worth looking at."

The post also cites customer results. Gamma says one customer's reporting cycle went "from 3 months to 5 days" after connecting Gamma to automated report workflows. These are Gamma's own figures, not independent tests.

The headline for most readers is availability. The post states that "Gamma 5 is live now for every user, on every plan." Existing gammas carry over, so nobody has to rebuild old decks.

What's new in Gamma 5

The announcement lists five changes. Each one targets a common complaint about AI-generated slides.

Change What Gamma says it does
Wider range of visual styles Opens up looks "from bold and playful to dark and moody to mid-century modern"
Two ways to edit Switch between agent-led editing and a fully freeform canvas
An agent that plans with you Asks questions and helps "build a sharper story before anything gets designed"
Your context, pulled in New enterprise connectors bring in material such as a Slack thread or a Granola call transcript
Import and export that keep design Brings in PowerPoint files, PDFs, and complex infographics with their design preserved

The editing change touches day-to-day work directly. The post puts it plainly: "Prompt the agent when you want speed; take over when you want things exactly where you want them."

The post also names what comes next. "Next up is memory," it says. Gamma plans to remember brand guidelines, preferences, and context from one project to the next.

How the Gamma 5 agent builds a deck

Gamma's help center describes the new create flow in four steps. In its words, creating "starts with a conversation, not a perfect prompt."

  1. Start with a prompt. Describe the deck in a sentence. You can paste notes, attach files, pick a template, or pull in content from connected tools.
  2. Answer a few questions. The agent asks about your goal, your audience, and what matters most. Each question offers tappable options, plus a Decide for me choice.
  3. Review the plan. The agent writes a plan covering the story, the style, and the look and feel. It "won't start building until you do."
  4. Let the agent build. It researches, writes, designs, and generates images. Slides appear in a live grid as they are created.

Changes happen in the same chat. The help article gives examples such as "Tighten the exec summary" and "Make the tone more formal." It says the agent edits "with the full context of your gamma and your original goal."

You can also restyle a deck without losing the words. The help article says restyling keeps your content, structure, and edits in place while the look changes. Regenerating, by contrast, starts the content over.

Speed is a known trade-off. Gamma's FAQ says the new flow takes longer than the old generator. The reason, it says, is that the agent is "understanding your goal, researching, planning a story, and designing each slide." If you are in a hurry, you can tell it to skip straight to a first draft.

Import, connectors, and export

Gamma rebuilt import for this release. The help article says "With Gamma 5, import has been rebuilt from the ground up." Imported decks keep their original layouts and structure, or Gamma can restyle them.

The import limits are specific:

  • PowerPoint (.pptx) and Word (.docx): up to 200 MB per file.
  • PDFs: up to 100 MB per file.
  • Webpages: paste a link.
  • Google Drive files: connect Google Drive through Connectors first.
  • Public Notion docs: paste a link, or paste the content.

You can also tell the agent how to treat your text. Gamma's examples include "Keep my text exactly as written" and "Condense this to the key points."

Connectors work in two directions. Inbound connectors feed your tools into Gamma's agent. The help center names Notion, Slack, Granola, HubSpot, Linear, Atlassian, and Stripe. Gamma says these connectors are read-only and only see what your own account can see.

Outbound connectors work the other way. They let you create gammas from inside ChatGPT, Claude, Glean, or Atlassian. Automation platforms such as Zapier, Make, and n8n can also generate gammas from events in other apps.

On export, Gamma lists PDF, PNG, and PowerPoint, plus Google Slides through a PPTX upload. Tables now export to PowerPoint as editable tables on all plans. Free-plan exports to PDF or PPTX carry a "Made by Gamma" badge.

Custom instructions, effort levels, and themes

Three settings shape every Gamma 5 deck.

Custom instructions. You can save standing rules, such as "Always use British English" or "Keep decks under 10 slides." Gamma says personal custom instructions "are available to all users as part of Gamma 5." Workspace-wide instructions are limited to the Enterprise plan.

Effort levels. The effort picker offers Lite, Standard, and Max. Max uses stronger models and does deeper research. The help article says it "cross-checks facts, and cites where information came from." Max is included on the Pro, Ultra, Business, and Enterprise plans.

File themes. Themes now live on each file, so a change affects only that gamma. You can still save a theme to your workspace to share it with your team.

What stays in Gamma Classic

Gamma kept the old generator. Its help center says the classic generator "is still available by clicking Use classic generator on your dashboard."

Some features live only there. Studio mode, which renders each slide as one AI-generated image, is a classic-only setting. Gamma's FAQ answers the question directly: "Studio is only in the classic generator." It adds that Gamma 5 creates fully editable gammas with separate text, layouts, and images.

Import behaves differently too. Gamma's help article says the classic generator "imports only the text from your file, not its design or layouts." To keep a deck's original design, import it from the Gamma 5 home screen.

Who can use Gamma 5 and what it costs

Access is broad. Every plan gets Gamma 5, and the announcement post says to try it at gamma.app.

Gamma's help pages name six plans: Free, Plus, Pro, Ultra, Business, and Enterprise. The differences that touch Gamma 5 show up in the help articles:

  • Free and Plus default to the Standard effort level.
  • Pro and above add the Max effort level and its deeper research.
  • Enterprise adds workspace custom instructions and admin control over connectors.
  • Plus, Pro, and Ultra remove the "Made by Gamma" badge from future exports.

We do not list Gamma prices here. On October 10, Gamma's pricing page showed prices in a local currency rather than US dollars, with no currency switch. Check the pricing page from your own region before you plan a budget.

Gamma 5 alternatives worth comparing

Several tools now turn a prompt or a file into a finished deck. The table compares them on what each vendor's own pages describe.

Option Where you work What its pages describe Starting point
Gamma 5 Gamma's own editor Agent plans the story, then builds; freeform canvas for hand edits A prompt, a file, or a connected tool
Claude Slides Inside a Claude conversation Decks that export to PowerPoint and PDF, or go to Google Slides A conversation with your context and files
Copilot in PowerPoint Microsoft PowerPoint Plans with the Idea Coach agent and combines multiple source files Files in Microsoft 365
Beautiful.ai Beautiful.ai's editor Outline review before generating, plus 300+ Smart Slide layouts A topic, an outline, or source material
Powerdrill Bloom Its own workspace Analysis of uploaded data and documents, then slides with charts Excel, CSV, PDF, or a topic

Claude Slides. Anthropic took Slides out of beta on October 8, 2026. Its announcement says Docs, Slides, and Design are "available on every plan, including Free." It also says PowerPoint and PDF downloads "look like what you made in the editor." Our explainer on Claude Slides covers the earlier launch.

Copilot in PowerPoint. Microsoft Learn's training module describes planning a deck with the Idea Coach agent. The module also covers combining "multiple source files into a single cohesive presentation."

Beautiful.ai. Its homepage describes a workflow where you "Review and refine a slide-by-slide outline" before generating. It also lists more than 300 Smart Slide layouts. See Powerdrill Bloom vs. Beautiful.ai for a side-by-side view.

Where a data-first workspace fits

Gamma 5 starts from the story and the look. Some decks start from a spreadsheet, a PDF report, or a folder of exports. The analysis comes first, and the slides follow.

That is the job Powerdrill Bloom is built around. Its PDF to PPT page says it "reads your document, researches related data online, and generates a brand-new PowerPoint." Its Excel to PPT page describes uploading Excel, CSV, or PDF files and exporting to PowerPoint.

Sourcing is the other difference. The Powerdrill Bloom homepage says "Every number comes back with the page, the row and the figure behind it." Its pricing page lists "Create basic slides, docs, sheets, and images" on the Free plan.

How to evaluate Gamma 5

Test it on a deck you already know well, such as last month's update or a recent pitch. You know what a good result looks like, so gaps are easy to spot.

Run three checks on the first draft:

  • Plan check. Read the agent's plan before it builds. Confirm the story order matches what your audience needs.
  • Import check. Import one real PowerPoint file. Compare fonts, layouts, and charts against the original.
  • Edit check. Make one change through the agent and one by hand. Note which is faster for your team.

If your deck depends on analyzing data first, you can try Powerdrill Bloom on the same source file and compare the two results.

Frequently asked questions

What is Gamma 5?

Gamma 5 is the version of Gamma released on October 6, 2026. It adds an AI agent that asks questions and plans a deck before building it. It also adds a freeform canvas, a wider range of visual styles, new connectors, and an import that keeps a deck's design.

Is Gamma 5 available on the free plan?

Yes. Gamma's announcement says Gamma 5 "is live now for every user, on every plan." The Free plan defaults to the Standard effort level, and its PDF and PowerPoint exports carry a "Made by Gamma" badge.

How do I use the classic generator in Gamma 5?

Click Use classic generator on your Gamma dashboard. Gamma's help center says the classic generator is still available. Studio mode, which renders each slide as one image, lives only in the classic generator.

How do I import a PowerPoint into Gamma 5?

Click Import below the prompt box on your dashboard, then upload a PPTX file of up to 200 MB. Gamma says PowerPoint and PDF imports in Gamma 5 keep their original layouts, design, and structure. The classic generator imports only the text.
