2023/Week 7 - Create a Ranked Table
Description
For Week 7 of 2023, we would like you to create a ranked table.
Summary
This week, we’re collaborating with Lindsay Betzendahl’s Project Health Viz. The data set comes from the Lown Institute Hospital Rankings Index, which grades over 3,000 American hospitals on metrics like inclusivity and outcomes. You can check out the full data and interactive website here: https://lownhospitalsindex.org/rankings/
Our challenge for this week is to visualize this data in a chart that is ranked by one (or more) metrics. Tableau makes it easy to create ranked tables with just a few clicks, and you can customize the table to highlight specific data points or add additional metrics as needed. You can also use interactive filters to explore the data and drill down into specific dimensions or subsets of data. Since this project is a collaboration, there are more fields than you need - that’s OK! Include at least the Name, City, and State of the hospital and sort the table by the hospital’s overall rank, “Lown Composite Overall Rank,” or by the metric of your choice!
The data set includes the following fields:
- RECORD_ID - unique key
- Name - Hospital Name
- State - Hospital State
- City - Hospital City
- Address - Hospital Street Address
- Zip - Hospital Zip Code
- Size - Hospital Size (small through extra large)
- TYPE_ForProfit - Is the hospital run by a for-profit company?
- TYPE_NonProfit - Is the hospital a not-for-profit organization?
- TYPE_chrch_affl_f - Is the hospital affiliated with a church (eg the Catholic church)
- TYPE_urban - Is the hospital in an urban setting?
- TYPE_rural - Is the hospital in a rural setting?
- Tier 1_Lown Composite Overall Rank - The Lown Index ranking for Social Responsibility is based on hospitals’ grades in Equity, Value, and Outcomes. The Index includes 53 metrics to provide a unique and holistic ranking of hospital performance.
- Tier 1_Lown Composite Overall Grade - A letter grade, A - F (A is best)
- Tier 2_Equity Overall Rank - The Equity grade combines assessments of community benefit spending, pay equity, and inclusivity to evaluate hospitals’ commitment to community health and civic leadership.
- Tier 2_Equity Overall Grade - A letter grade, A - F (A is best)
- Tier 3_Pay Equity Rank - The pay equity component measures the difference in compensation of hospital executives compared to health care workers without advanced degrees.
- Tier 3_Community Benefit Rank - The community benefit metric measures hospital spending on charity care and other community health initiatives, as well as their service of Medicaid patients.
- Tier 3_Inclusivity Rank - The inclusivity component evaluates the extent to which a hospital’s patient population reflects the demographics of the community in which it is located, based on race, income, and education levels.
- Tier 3_Pay Equity Grade - A letter grade, A - F (A is best)
- Tier 3_Community Benefit Grade - A letter grade, A - F (A is best)
- Tier 3_Inclusivity Grade - A letter grade, A - F (A is best)
There are several more metrics in the data set that you may choose to use (or ignore). For descriptions, see the methodology section: https://lownhospitalsindex.org/rankings/our-methodology/
For those newer to Tableau, focus on ranking by your selected metric and on using color effectively and purposefully in your chart. Play with formatting, detail, and colors to see how it affects your chart. Make sure your chart has an appropriate description, title, or labels. Keep things simple and try not to over-complicate the chart, but be sure to communicate a key insight. For those more experienced users, get creative. However, don't compromise quality if trying something new.
Take your time over the next week to create your chart. Share your visualization on Tableau Public, Twitter, and/or LinkedIn. Use the hashtag #B2VB and tag us (@ReadySetData and @ItsElisaDavis on Twitter/LinkedIn) - yes, even if you’re not sure you “officially” did the prompt.
This week, also tag #projecthealthviz and @ZenDollData. If you’re open to feedback, say so when you post. Finally, fill out the submission form on the Back 2 Viz Basic's website and Project Health Viz website.
Good luck!
