2022/Week 25 - Use an Image

back2vizbasics·January 20, 2025

Description

For Week 25, we would like you to use an image.

Summary

For Week 25, we would like you to use an image. Specifically, we would like you to use several images of prior Back to Viz Basics dashboards to create a “greatest hits” viz!

This challenge will let you practice two incredibly handy skills - embedding images into Tableau Dashboards (helpful for adding client logos and more) and creating a “viz of vizzes.” As soon as there are three or more BI tools deployed, requests for a landing page or confusion about which viz answers which question begin to arise. Demonstrate mastery of this skill while putting together your own #B2VB 2022 playlist! These can be your own submissions or entries by others that you find inspiring.

The data source contains any #B2VB viz that had been submitted to the tracker before 12/6/22, but newer vizzes are fair game also. We are not asking you to viz this entire data set! But if you are looking for other people’s work to highlight, this will help you find inspiration. The data set contains the following fields:

  • Timestamp: When the viz was submitted to the tracker. Not necessarily when it was published or aligned with the current challenge. (auto-generated date/time)
  • What is your Name: Self-reported author name (text field)
  • What is your Twitter Handle (include the @ symbol): self-reported twitter handle (text field)
  • Week Submitted: Which B2VB challenge was completed (dropdown menu/text field)
  • If there is a link to your interactive viz, please share it: self-provided web link (URL/text field)
  • Viz of the Day: Was this featured as Viz of the Day? (yes/no text field)

For those newer to Tableau, try to consider using color effectively and purposefully in your chart. Play with formatting to see how it affects your chart. Make sure your chart has an appropriate description, title, and labels. Keep things simple and try not to over-complicate the chart. For those more experienced users, get creative. However, don't compromise quality if trying something new.

This is our final challenge of 2022, so take your time over the next month to create a viz featuring any number of prior submissions (but we recommend at least three). The only requirement is that you use an image, but we’d encourage you to also link it to the interactive viz. Of course, you’re welcome to catch up on any challenges you may have missed and feature your new entries here!

When you’re ready, share your visualization on Tableau Public, Twitter, and/or LinkedIn. Use the hashtag #B2VB and tag us (@ReadySetData and @ItsElisaDavis on Twitter). Finally, fill out the submission form on the Back 2 Viz Basic's website.

Good luck!

Tip: if your images are rendering fuzzy (fuzzily?), change the file name from image.png to image@2x.png and re-load the image into the dashboard.
