What Is Claude Cowork? Features, Plans, and Alternatives (2026)
Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agent for non-coding knowledge work. It takes a goal, works across the files and tools you already have, and returns a finished deck, document or spreadsheet. It is generally available on macOS and Windows through the Claude Desktop app, and rolling out on web and mobile in beta.
The short version of why it matters: Claude Code proved that an agent can hold a multi-step task together for developers. Cowork is the same idea pointed at research, analysis and document creation, with a visual interface instead of a terminal.

What happened
Cowork launched as a research preview and has since become generally available on macOS and Windows through the Claude Desktop app. Web and mobile are still labelled beta on Anthropic's own product page.
Anthropic frames it as bringing Claude Code's agentic capabilities to knowledge work beyond coding. The desktop app is the point of the exercise: it reaches "the folders and applications on your own computer," which web and mobile cannot.
The product page describes the interaction in one line. Give it a goal, and it works across your files and tools. It takes action on its own while showing you each step, and it can run unattended or on a schedule.
What Claude Cowork actually produces
The output claim is unusually concrete for an agent product. In Anthropic's words, you can start a task at your desk and check in on it from your phone. What comes back is a polished deck, document or spreadsheet for review.
That is three finished artefacts rather than a chat transcript, and it happens to be the same trio most reporting workflows end in. Format matters as much as content here. Anyone who has watched an agent produce an excellent summary, only to retype it into a corporate template afterwards, knows why. Three properties are worth naming:
It works in place. Cowork operates directly on your files and tools rather than asking you to paste content into a chat window. On desktop that includes local folders, which is where most working documents actually live rather than in a cloud drive.
It is steerable mid-run. The agent shows each step as it works, so you can redirect before it finishes rather than discovering the wrong answer at the end.
It can run without you. Unattended and scheduled execution are supported. That is what turns a one-off task into a standing one. Of everything on this list, it is the capability most likely to change how a team works rather than only how fast it works.
Where it runs, and what that changes
Downloads cover macOS, Windows on both x64 and arm64, ChromeOS and Linux. Web and mobile are rolling out in beta.
The desktop-first choice is a design decision, not a limitation. An agent that can read the folders on your machine can work on the spreadsheet you never uploaded anywhere, which is most of them.
It also relocates the security boundary. A cloud tool sees what you upload to it. A desktop agent sees what your user account can open, which is a much wider surface. That is convenient on a personal machine and worth a conversation on a managed one. The scoping question shifts from "what did I share" to "what could it reach."
The scheduling capability compounds this. A task that runs unattended is a task nobody is watching, so the review step has to be designed in rather than assumed.
Plans, and what Anthropic has not published
Cowork works with a paid Claude plan. Anthropic's product page states that requirement plainly and does not list per-tier pricing or which specific plans include it.

What it means if your work starts with a dataset
Cowork is strong when the task is a sequence you could describe to a capable colleague. Gather these files, pull the relevant sections, draft the document. That describes a lot of knowledge work accurately.
Analysis work has a different shape. Before anything can be drafted, three questions have to be answered against the data itself. Which columns carry the story. What the number actually is, once you settle the grouping and the period. And which chart represents it without exaggerating. Those are not steps in a sequence. They are judgments that depend on what the data turns out to contain.

None of these rows is a verdict on quality. They mark different points in the same pipeline, and the honest question is which point you are actually standing at.
The test is simple. If you could write the instructions for a competent assistant before opening the file, a general agent will execute them well. If you would have to open the file first to know what the instructions should be, the reading step is the work. That step belongs to a tool built for it.
Where a dedicated data agent still fits
The distinction is the starting assumption, not quality. A general agent assumes you know what needs doing and want it done across your files. A data agent assumes you have a dataset and do not yet know what it says.
