Fill with Gemini in Google Sheets: Web Citations, Access, and Alternatives (2026)

Fill with Gemini in Google Sheets now shows the web sources behind each AI-generated cell. Google announced the update on October 28, 2026. The same release lets one request cover up to 3,000 cells and speeds up processing. The rollout began on October 20 and can take up to 15 days to reach every account.
This guide covers what changed, how Fill with Gemini works, who can use it, and the limits to plan around. It also explains how to turn it off and closes with the main alternatives. Every detail comes from the vendors' own pages, read on October 29, 2026.
What Google announced on October 28
Google posted the update on its Workspace Updates blog on October 28, 2026, a Wednesday. The post opens with one line: "We are making it easier to verify your AI-generated data and scale your workflows in Google Sheets."
The release has three parts:
- Web sources in each cell. When the AI function fills cells from the web, Gemini now lists "the exact web sources referenced directly within each individual cell."
- Bigger requests. Google describes "expanded capacity supporting up to 3,000 cells per request."
- Faster processing. Google says the upgrade delivers "faster response times and improved cell-over-cell consistency."
Google frames the citations as a trust feature. In its words, "This cell-level source attribution gives you full visibility to audit, verify, and cross-reference outputs for greater trust and accuracy."
There is one scope note. Google says "Sources are attributed to each individual cell and are available in Google Sheets on the web." The post does not mention the mobile apps.
What Fill with Gemini is
Fill with Gemini launched on April 22, 2026. Google described it as "a new AI-powered feature designed to make data preparation and manual entry even easier."
It is not a separate engine. Google's admin note says "This feature is an entry point to the existing AI function." In other words, it is a faster way to use the AI function without typing a formula.
Google's April post describes two ways to use it:
- Drag to fill. If your column has at least one completed cell, you can drag to fill it. Gemini fills the column "based on the context of the table."
- Fill a selection. For empty multi-cell selections, you get a one-click entry point to "Fill" the range. You can fill from a completed example or write a custom prompt.
The April post gave two examples. A marketing team can draft suggested replies from customer feedback. A small business owner can fill out product details by describing what they need.
On July 7, Google added 11 more languages, including Mandarin, Dutch, and Turkish. Before that, it was available in eight languages, including English, Spanish, and Japanese.
How the AI function works behind it
Since Fill with Gemini runs on the AI function, the function's help page explains what it can do. Google lists five uses: "Generate text. Summarize information. Categorize information. Analyze sentiment. Access real-time information from Google Search."
You can also call the function directly. Google says "You can use either “=AI()” or “=Gemini()”." One of its examples is =AI("Categorize the customer inquiry as a compliment, exchange request, or return request.",C2).
Three details matter for anyone checking results:
- Context comes from the range you give it. Google says the function "doesn’t have access to your entire spreadsheet or other files in your Google Drive." It recommends passing the relevant cells as the range argument.
- Edits are attributed to you. When you insert generated content, "the cell edit is attributed to you in version history."
- You can see the sources. The help page says you click into a cell, hover over the content, and choose Sources.
The October post describes citations for web sources. If you categorize your own customer comments, the input is the range you passed in.
What the update changes in practice
Citations change how much work it takes to check a filled column. A web answer you cannot trace is risky in anything you plan to publish or report.
Take a common task. A sales operations analyst has 800 company names and wants each company's headquarters city. The feature can fill the column from the web. Now the analyst can open any cell and see the page behind the answer. A spot check of 20 cells takes minutes instead of a fresh search for each one.
The larger request size matters for the same analyst. Google says the old speed claim was "9x faster than manual entry for 100-cell tasks." The new claim is "up to 55 times faster than manual entry for 500 cell tasks." Both figures come from Google's own internal study of 95 participants, using English prompts for the newer test.
The 3,000-cell figure also shapes how you plan a job. A list of 10,000 rows still needs several requests. Split it into blocks and check a sample from each block.
Who can use it
Google lists the same editions for this update as for the original launch.
| Group | Editions listed by Google |
|---|---|
| Business | Business Standard and Plus |
| Enterprise | Enterprise Standard and Plus |
| Consumer | Google AI Pro and Ultra |
| Education add-ons | Google AI Pro for Education |
| Other add-ons | AI Expanded Access |
For admins, the October post says "This feature will be available by default to users with Gemini in Sheets enabled." Users open Gemini in Sheets from the "Ask Gemini" button in the top right corner of a spreadsheet.
The rollout is gradual. Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains both list a "Gradual rollout (up to 15 days for feature visibility) started on October 20, 2026." If you do not see web sources in a cell yet, the update may still be on its way.
Google does not list a separate price for Fill with Gemini. It comes with the plans above.
How to turn off Fill with Gemini
Search suggestions show many people want to switch it off, often because the drag entry point appears while they work. Google's pages describe one control.
Google's April post says Fill with Gemini "will be hidden if the Smart features for Google Workspace setting is disabled." Admins manage that setting for their users in the Admin console. Google's July post adds that users "must have Workspace smart features enabled" to use it.
That control is broad. Turning off smart features affects more than this one feature in Sheets. Teams that only want to avoid accidental fills may prefer to agree on a simple habit. Run the fill in a copy of the sheet, then paste the checked values into the main file.
Limits to know before you rely on it
The AI function help page lists several limits. They also apply to fills, which run on the same function.
Text only. Google says "Responses are limited to text." Numbers come back as text answers, so convert and check them before you sum or chart them.
No undo. Google says "You can’t undo or redo your function. You can regenerate your output instead." Keep a copy of the original column before a large fill.
Generation limits. Google says the function "has short term and long term generation limits." If you reach a long term limit, you wait 24 hours before you can generate again.
A help page that has not caught up. The help page, read on October 29, still says "only the first 350 selected cells with AI functions will be generated." The October post describes up to 3,000 cells per request for this feature. Expect the help page to change as the rollout completes.
Some storage setups block it. Google says you cannot generate content if you access Sheets through Box, Dropbox, or Egnyte.
AI answers can be wrong. Google's help page warns that "Gemini features may suggest inaccurate or inappropriate information." Citations make checking easier. They do not replace the check.
Fill with Gemini alternatives
Several tools cover similar work, from spreadsheet assistants to file-based analysis. The table uses each vendor's own pages, read on October 29, 2026.
| Option | What it offers | Price, per the vendor |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 with Copilot in Excel | Copilot in a side pane inside Excel | Microsoft 365 Premium, $19.99/month or $199.99/year |
| Claude | Anthropic's assistant, with a Google Workspace integration | Pro, $17 per month with annual billing or $20 billed monthly |
| Gemini in Sheets side panel | Tables, formulas, and charts from data inside the sheet | Included with the Workspace and Google AI plans listed above |
| Powerdrill Bloom | An AI workspace that turns files and databases into analysis, reports, and slides | Free $0.00; Pro $13.27/mo |
Microsoft 365 with Copilot in Excel suits teams that work in Excel. One change is worth knowing. Microsoft retired its in-cell COPILOT function. Its support page says "As of September 14, 2026, the function is no longer available." Microsoft now points users to the Copilot pane for the same kinds of tasks. Microsoft's plan page lists "Get powerful analysis and insights with Copilot in Excel" among the Premium features.
Claude is Anthropic's assistant, with its own Google Workspace integration. Our Claude for Google Workspace guide covers that setup.
Gemini in Sheets side panel handles requests about the whole sheet, such as building a table or a chart. Google's help page lists "Create tables. Create formulas. Generate data analysis and insights. Build charts and graphs." Our guide to Gemini in Google Sheets for BigQuery covers its newest data source.

Where Powerdrill Bloom fits
Fill with Gemini works cell by cell inside a sheet. Many teams need the step after that: a finished analysis or report built from the whole table, with each figure traced to its source.
Powerdrill Bloom covers that step. Its homepage says "Every number comes back with the page, the row and the figure behind it." The Free plan lists "Upload Excel, CSV, PDF, and docs." You can export a sheet as Excel or CSV, upload it, and ask in natural language.
Three pages match work people often do after a fill:
- The changelog describes Insight Trail, which lets you "Track every AI insight back to its original source." It adds that "Every annotation is validated with clear citation trails."
- The AI Review Summary Generator groups customer feedback "into themes, sentiment and a leadership-ready callout."
- The AI Data Cleaning page says you can "Clean your Excel, CSV, TSV spreadsheets effortlessly."
For a manual route, see our guide on cleaning and deduplicating Excel data with AI.
On price, the pricing page lists a Free plan at $0.00 and Pro at $13.27/mo. Pro adds monthly credits and 20 scheduled tasks. To compare it with Fill with Gemini, try Powerdrill Bloom with the same customer list you would fill in Sheets.
