Claude for Google Workspace: Docs, Sheets, Slides, Access, and Alternatives (2026)

Claude for Google Workspace is a new add-on that puts Claude in a sidebar inside Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides. Anthropic announced it on October 6, 2026, as a public beta on all paid Claude plans. Claude reads the file you have open and edits it in place.
This guide covers what the add-on does in each app, how edits and approvals work, and who can install it. It also covers the limits Anthropic lists and the alternatives worth comparing. Every detail comes from vendor pages read on October 8, 2026.
What Anthropic released on October 6
The announcement has two parts. The first is Claude for Google Workspace itself. In Anthropic's words, it "adds Claude to Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, so that you can work with Claude directly in your open files."
The second part runs the other way. Anthropic is also "releasing new Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors (beta) that Claude uses to create and edit Google files directly from Claude." So you can start in the file or start in a Claude chat.
The announcement is dated October 6, 2026, in its page data. The Claude Help Center now carries a full setup guide, and the Google Workspace Marketplace lists the app under Anthropic.
This is a different product from the Claude Docs and Claude Slides surfaces that Anthropic added to the Claude app in September. Those live inside a Claude conversation. Our Claude Slides explainer covers that launch.
What Claude can do in Docs, Sheets, and Slides
The help guide says Claude for Google Workspace lets Claude "draft, analyze, restructure, and restyle without copying content back and forth." Each app gets its own set of jobs.
In Google Docs
Anthropic says Claude "can fix a sentence or restyle a heading in place without touching the surrounding formatting." For bigger rewrites, it can propose edits as suggestion cards that you apply or dismiss.
The help guide gives sample requests such as cutting a 14-page brief to 6 pages without losing the numbered requirements. Another turns the notes under "Next steps" into a table with owner, action, and due date.
In Google Sheets
According to the announcement, Claude "can write formulas, build pivot tables and native Sheets charts, and add new tabs." For joins or data cleaning, it can pull a range into Python and write the results back.
Anthropic's own example is a budget task. You attach source files to an empty sheet. Then you ask for "a Q3 budget vs. actuals report with a tab for each team and a summary chart." Claude can then flag anything that is over budget. Our guide to the budget vs. actual report covers the same deliverable by hand.
In Google Slides
Claude "can build new slides from your deck's layouts and themes, so they match the rest of the deck." It can then check its work and flag elements that overlap or run off the slide, or text that is hard to read.
The help guide's sample requests include splitting a text-heavy slide into two and adding a bar chart of regional numbers in the deck's colors.
How edits and approvals work
With Claude for Google Workspace, Claude edits as you, not as a separate account. The help guide says Google records the changes under your name, so they appear in version history like any edit you make.
You choose how much Claude asks first. The sidebar has two modes:
| Mode | What happens |
|---|---|
| Ask before edits (the default) | Each change appears as an approval card, and Claude waits for you |
| Accept all edits | Claude works through the task and applies ordinary edits without stopping |
Some actions need approval in either mode. The help guide says Claude "stops and asks before it inserts an image from a web address, adds a link, or removes anyone's access." Those requests carry a "Security review" label.
The sidebar also brings your Claude setup with it. The announcement says it has "the same models, connectors, and skills you use in Claude." Anthropic's example is a quarterly business review deck built from Salesforce history and call notes in Google Drive. Once the review format is saved as a skill, your team can reuse it for the next deck.
Starting in the file or starting in Claude
The add-on and the connectors solve slightly different problems.
Claude for Google Workspace is best when you already have the file open. Claude reads that file, plus anything you select or attach. The help guide puts the scope plainly: "Claude reads the file you have open, and only that file."
The connectors are best when the work spans several files or needs a new one. You paste a Google file link or ask for a doc, sheet, or deck from the chat. On supported setups, the file opens in a pane beside the conversation. The connectors guide says this works on Claude on the web and Claude Desktop.
Access follows your Google sharing settings in both cases. The announcement says "Claude's access matches your existing Google sharing permissions."
How to access Claude for Google Workspace
The help guide lists three requirements:
- A paid Claude plan. The beta is available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans.
- A Google account that can install Marketplace apps. Many organizations block these by default, so you may need your admin.
- A supported browser. The guide names Chrome, Edge, and Safari for this beta.
To install it for yourself, open the Claude listing in the Google Workspace Marketplace and click Install. Then open any file and go to Extensions, Claude, Open Claude. The guide notes that "One install covers Docs, Sheets, and Slides."
Admins can install it for the whole domain or for selected groups from the Google Admin console. For the chat-side connectors on Team and Enterprise plans, an owner or primary owner must turn them on first.
On price, the add-on comes with the plan. The Claude pricing page lists Pro at $17 per month on the annual plan, or $20 billed monthly. Max starts from $100 per month.
Limits to know before you rely on it
Anthropic's help guide lists the current beta limits in detail. These are the ones most likely to affect report and deck work:
- One file at a time. Claude works only on the file it was opened in. The guide says it "can't open, create, or copy other files in Drive."
- No export from the sidebar. The same list says it cannot export the file as a PDF or download.
- Charts in Slides are pictures. The guide says "Charts Claude creates are inserted as images, not linked Sheets charts, so they do not update when numbers change."
- Long jobs time out. A single operation can run for up to six minutes before Google stops it.
- Comments are off-limits in Docs. Claude cannot read, reply to, or resolve comments.
- Live data tabs are skipped. Connected Sheets tabs with live BigQuery data cannot be read or edited.
The chart limit matters most for recurring decks. If the numbers change next month, you ask Claude to regenerate the chart rather than refresh it.
Privacy and admin controls
Claude for Google Workspace asks Google for two permissions. One shows the sidebar, and the other lets Claude read and edit the file it was installed in.
On data use, the help guide is direct: "Anthropic does not use this content to train its models." Inputs and outputs are deleted from Anthropic's systems within 30 days, with exceptions described in its retention article.
On Enterprise plans, the guide lists the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys, and OpenTelemetry audit export as supported. It also lists two gaps for this beta: zero data retention is not available, and HIPAA-ready organizations are not covered.
Alternatives worth knowing
Claude is not the only assistant that works inside Google files. The table compares the options on what each vendor's own pages describe.
| Option | Where it works | What its pages describe | Plans named on the page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude for Google Workspace | Docs, Sheets, Slides sidebar | Edits in place, approval modes, connectors and skills | Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise |
| Gemini in Google Workspace | Side panel in Docs, Sheets, Slides | Third-party tools through MCP, reusable skills | Business and Enterprise editions, Google AI Pro and Ultra |
| ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets | Sidebar in Excel and Sheets | Build, update, and understand spreadsheets in place | Free and Go with limited usage, plus paid plans |
| Powerdrill Bloom | Its own workspace | Files in, then slides, docs, sheets, and charts out | Free, Pro, Plus, Premium, Team Pro |
Gemini in Google Workspace. Google's own assistant sits in the same apps. A Google Workspace Updates post from September 15 covers tools such as Asana, HubSpot, and Salesforce. Users reach them "through the Gemini side panel in Docs, Sheets, and Slides." A September 30 post adds reusable skills. Our Gemini cross-app decks explainer covers its deck features.
ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets. OpenAI's May 5 release notes describe "a sidebar in Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets so you can build, update, and understand spreadsheets in place." Separately, OpenAI's August 13 notes say Docs, Sheets, and Slides can stay open beside a ChatGPT conversation.
Claude for Microsoft 365. For teams on Office rather than Google, Anthropic's help guide points to its Microsoft 365 add-in. It notes that "Work across apps" between Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is a Microsoft 365 feature.
Where a file-first workspace fits
A sidebar shines when the file already exists and the job is to change it. Some reports start one step earlier, with a stack of exports that has not become a file yet.
That is the job Powerdrill Bloom is built around. Its homepage lists Document Writing, Spreadsheets & Data, and Slide Decks among its use cases. It describes itself as "The AI data analyst that shows its work." The homepage adds: "Every number comes back with the page, the row and the figure behind it."
The two approaches can work together. You can build a sourced analysis from raw files first, then bring the result into Docs or Slides for final edits. Our Excel AI assistant page covers spreadsheet questions, and our Google Sheets canvas explainer covers another way to turn sheets into dashboards.
How to start with Claude for Google Workspace
Start with a file you already know well. A sheet with a known total, or a deck you presented last month, makes mistakes easy to spot.
Keep the default "Ask before edits" mode for the first week. Read each approval card before you allow it, and use version history to undo anything you do not want.
Pick one recurring task, such as a monthly variance tab or a status deck. Run it with Claude and by hand once, then compare the two results line by line.
If your report starts from a pile of exports rather than one open file, you can try Powerdrill Bloom to build the first sourced version.
