ChatGPT Slides: What's New, How It Works, and Alternatives (2026)

ChatGPT Slides arrived in OpenAI's release notes on October 16, 2026. The notes say "ChatGPT Slides lets you create presentations and keep working on them with your team in Space." You can start a deck from a conversation, files, or an outline, then edit it with teammates and ChatGPT. When it is ready, you present it from ChatGPT or export it.
This guide covers what OpenAI announced and what was already there before. It also covers who can use ChatGPT Slides, how to make a deck, and how sharing and export work. The last sections cover limits and the main alternatives. Facts were read from OpenAI's release notes, Help Center, and ChatGPT Learn documentation on October 19, 2026.
What OpenAI announced on October 16
The release note entry is titled "Create and collaborate on slides in ChatGPT." It describes three parts of the new feature.
Create and refine. The note says you can "Edit text, images, shapes, and charts directly, or ask ChatGPT to make changes." You can also generate custom images or add your own.
Work together. Teammates can join the same deck. The note says you can "Invite teammates to edit the same deck in real time and leave shared comments."
Present or export. You can present directly from ChatGPT. The note adds: "On the web, export to PowerPoint, PDF, or Google Slides." In the desktop app, you can open the deck in PowerPoint or Keynote when those apps are installed.
The starting point matters too. The note says to "Start from a conversation, files, or an outline, or share an example deck to guide the style and layout." That last option lets a team reuse the look of an existing deck.
What was already there before ChatGPT Slides
ChatGPT could make presentations before October 16. What changed is where the deck lives and who can work on it. Four dates explain the difference.
July 6: ChatGPT for PowerPoint. OpenAI's notes said "ChatGPT for PowerPoint is now generally available globally." It works from a sidebar inside Microsoft PowerPoint. The notes added that "Slides remain editable in PowerPoint, although advanced edits and template matching may still require review."
July 9: ChatGPT Work. OpenAI introduced Work as an agent for longer tasks. The notes said it can "create finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and Sites." Those presentations were files you downloaded and opened elsewhere.
September 29: ChatGPT Space. Space arrived with Pages, a shared place for work. The notes said "Space replaces Library for accounts with access; your existing Projects remain separate."
October 16: Slides inside Space. The deck is now an object in Space that people edit together, with ChatGPT in the same room. It no longer has to be a file passed around by email.
Our explainer on ChatGPT for PowerPoint covers the add-in in more detail. For the agent behind the files, see what ChatGPT Work is.
Who can use ChatGPT Slides
Access depends on your plan and on Space. The Help Center article says "Slides is available on ChatGPT Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans with Space access." The release note says the same plans get it "on the web and in the desktop app."
The rollout is gradual. The Help Center says Slides "is rolling out to eligible accounts," and it may not appear for your account yet.
Device support differs by platform:
- Web. Full creation, editing, sharing, and export.
- Desktop. Creation and editing, plus opening the deck in PowerPoint or Keynote if installed.
- Mobile. ChatGPT Learn says "On mobile, you can create slides through conversation and view decks." Editing slide elements needs the web or desktop.
- Windows. Some Windows devices create a PowerPoint file instead of a collaborative deck. The Help Center says "Windows 10 does not support this component," and points users to cloud mode or the web.
Managed workspaces add one more layer. OpenAI's admin guide says "Slides uses the same access setting as Space and pages." If your admin has not turned on Space sharing, collaboration may be limited.
How to create a deck with ChatGPT Slides
OpenAI describes two ways to start. Both end in an editable deck in Space.
Ask ChatGPT in Work. The release note says "To get started, ask ChatGPT in Work to create a presentation in Space." Describe the topic, the audience, and what the deck should cover. You can use an existing conversation or attach source files.
Start in Space. The Help Center says to select Create, then Slide. You can begin with a blank slide or choose a template.
ChatGPT Learn gives a sample request that shows the level of detail that works:
"Create an 8-slide quarterly business review in Space using these notes and metrics."
The full example also names the audience, the sections, a style reference, and a request to flag missing information. Those details tell ChatGPT what the deck is for. A short checklist for your own requests:
- State the length. Give a slide count, or a time limit for the talk.
- Name the audience. A leadership team and a training group need different decks.
- Attach the sources. Notes, metrics, and files give ChatGPT something to cite.
- Point to a style. Share an example deck or a template.
- Ask for gaps. Ask ChatGPT to flag what it could not find, rather than fill it in.
Write the request in natural language, as you would brief a colleague.
Editing, collaboration, and export
Once the deck exists, editing works at two levels. You can change slide elements by hand. The Help Center lists "text, images, shapes, tables, and charts" as editable.
For targeted help, select an element and choose Request edits. For changes across the deck, use the prompt bar. The Help Center suggests asks such as shortening a slide, updating a chart from new data, or revising the layout.
Collaboration follows Space's sharing model. ChatGPT Learn says "Slides currently supports view and edit access; a separate comment-only role isn't available." People with edit access can change the same deck at once. In shared comments, you can mention a teammate, ChatGPT, or your dot to request a revision.
Presenting happens inside ChatGPT. ChatGPT Learn notes you can present "with speaker notes."
Export depends on the surface. On the web, the Help Center lists three formats:
| Export | What it is for, per OpenAI |
|---|---|
| PowerPoint (.pptx) | Continue editing the file in PowerPoint |
| Share a copy for viewing | |
| Google Slides | Continue working in Google Slides |
OpenAI adds a caution for every export. The Help Center says "Open the exported presentation and check its content and formatting before using it."
Sharing, permissions, and data
Slides inherits Space's rules on access, and three of them matter for decks.
Linked files keep their own access. ChatGPT Learn says "Linked files keep their original permissions." A teammate who can open your deck may still be unable to open a source file linked from it.
Copied content is visible. Anything summarized onto a page or deck is visible to people who can open it. The same guide says sharing a page doesn't share your private chats or saved memory.
Admins control sharing. OpenAI's admin guide notes that turning off sharing "blocks new shares and permission changes, but existing shared access remains." Deleting a page or Space moves it to Trash.
The admin guide also flags a broader risk. It says "Pages, files, and tool results may contain prompt injections that redirect ChatGPT or disclose information." Review what a deck pulls in from outside sources before you share it.
ChatGPT Slides vs. ChatGPT for PowerPoint
OpenAI now offers two ways to make decks with ChatGPT. They suit different teams.
| ChatGPT Slides | ChatGPT for PowerPoint | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you work | Space in ChatGPT, on the web or desktop | A sidebar inside Microsoft PowerPoint |
| Collaboration | Shared deck with view and edit access and shared comments | PowerPoint's own sharing |
| Plans, per OpenAI | Pro, Business, and Enterprise with Space access | Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu, and K-12 |
| Output | A deck in Space, exported to PPTX, PDF, or Google Slides | Slides that stay in the PowerPoint file |
| Best fit | Teams that draft and revise a deck together with ChatGPT | People who build decks in PowerPoint already |
The add-in's plan list comes from the July 6 notes. They describe it as available "subject to plan limits and workspace settings."
Limits to know before you rely on it
A few limits come straight from OpenAI's own pages.
- Plan and rollout. Slides needs Pro, Business, or Enterprise with Space access, and it is still rolling out.
- No comment-only role. The Help Center says comment-only access is not available at launch.
- Windows devices. Without the required component, the desktop app makes a PowerPoint file instead of a shared deck.
- Mobile is for drafting and viewing. Element editing needs the web or desktop.
- Exports need a check. OpenAI asks you to review content and formatting after export.
- Numbers need a source. The Help Center says to "Review the text, figures, and layout before sharing or presenting your deck."
That last point deserves a fixed step in your review. A slide that looks finished can still carry a number that came from the wrong row.
ChatGPT Slides alternatives
Several tools now build decks from a request. The table lists the main options, with access as each vendor describes it. Details were read on October 19, 2026.
| Option | How it builds a deck | Access, per the vendor |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Slides | From a conversation, files, or an outline, then edited together in Space | Pro, Business, and Enterprise with Space access |
| Claude Slides | Inside a Claude conversation, using its context and files | Every Claude plan, including Free |
| Gemini in Google Slides | From a prompt in the Slides side panel, grounded in Drive files | Listed Workspace editions, plus Google AI Pro and Ultra |
| Copilot in PowerPoint | From a prompt inside PowerPoint | Microsoft 365 plans that include Copilot |
| Gamma | An agent asks questions, shows a plan, then builds the deck | Free and paid plans |
| Powerdrill Bloom | From files, data, or a topic, with sourced charts | Free plan available |
Claude Slides is part of Anthropic's chat app. Anthropic says "Claude Docs, Slides, and Design are out of beta and available on every plan, including Free." It adds that "PowerPoint and PDF downloads look like what you made in the editor, and decks go straight to Google Slides as editable files." Our Claude Slides explainer has more.
Gemini in Google Slides works inside Google's own editor. Google's June 30 update says "You can now create a full, multi-slide presentation using Gemini in Google Slides." The same update says that at launch, the feature supports English (United States) only. Our guide to Gemini cross-app decks covers the Workspace side.
Copilot in PowerPoint suits people who already live in Office. Microsoft's page says "Go from prompt to presentation with Copilot in PowerPoint."
Gamma leads with its agent. Its help center says the agent "asks a few smart questions, shows you its plan, and then builds the whole thing." See our Gamma 5 explainer for its latest release.
Where a data-backed deck fits
ChatGPT Slides is built for teams that write and revise a deck together. Some decks start somewhere else: in a spreadsheet, a set of PDFs, or a database export. For those, the hard part is the analysis behind each slide, not the layout.
That is the job Powerdrill Bloom is built for. Its homepage calls it "The AI data analyst that shows its work." It adds: "Every number comes back with the page, the row and the figure behind it."
Two of its pages describe the path from source to deck. The Excel to PPT page covers turning spreadsheets into slides. The Topic to PPT page says Powerdrill Bloom "intelligently searches, analyzes, and explores related information" around a topic. It then organizes that information into a narrative with charts.
On price, the Powerdrill Bloom pricing page lists a Free plan at $0.00. The Free plan includes "Upload Excel, CSV, PDF, and docs" and "Create basic slides, docs, sheets, and images." Pro is $199.00 per year and adds "Create slides, Office docs, Excel analysis, and Nano Banana images."
The two can work together. Build the analysis and charts where every figure has a source. Then bring the findings into a shared deck for the team to shape. Want to test it? Try Powerdrill Bloom with one spreadsheet you report on every month.
How to test it on a real deck
Before you move a team deck into ChatGPT Slides, run one small trial. Five checks keep it honest.
- Pick a deck you already know. A monthly update works well, because you know what it should say.
- Give it the real sources. Attach the notes and metrics you would use yourself.
- Ask for a slide count and an audience. Compare the structure with your last version.
- Check every figure. Trace each number on the slides back to its source.
- Export once. Open the PPTX or Google Slides copy and look for layout changes.
Note how many slides you had to fix by hand. That tells you whether the next deck should start there. For a final pass, our guide to reviewing a data deck before you send it has a checklist.
