Claude Ultra Plan: What's New, Usage Limits, and Alternatives (2026)

Anthropic renamed its top consumer plan on October 30, 2026 (US time). Max 20x is now called Ultra, and the price stays at $200 per month. The main change is to limits: verified Ultra accounts no longer have a five-hour usage limit.

This guide covers what changed, what the Ultra plan includes, how its usage limits work, and how it compares with Pro and Max. It ends with alternatives for heavy report and slide work. Every detail comes from vendor pages read on November 5, 2026.

What Anthropic changed on October 30

The official Claude account announced the change on X on October 30, US time. In Asian time zones, the post is dated October 31. The post renamed both Max tiers. Max 5x became Max, and Max 20x became Ultra.

Prices did not change. The post said Max is still $100 per month and Ultra is still $200. It told subscribers there was nothing they needed to do.

The same post announced the bigger change. Anthropic is removing the five-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts, starting with most existing subscribers.

An Anthropic team member who works on the Claude community summed it up the same day. On X, Ado (@adocomplete) wrote: "Same price, same overall limits, but no 5-hour limit on verified accounts."

Anthropic's help center now has a full article on the plan, titled "What is the Ultra plan?" It says: "The Max 20x plan is now called the Ultra plan." It adds that existing Max 20x subscribers "move to Ultra automatically, with no price change."

What the Ultra plan includes

The help article lists six key benefits for the Ultra plan:

  • More usage capacity. "Get 10 times the Pro plan's usage every week."
  • No five-hour limit for verified accounts. You work within your weekly limit at your own pace.
  • Priority access. You are among the first to try new models, features, and products.
  • Access to Claude Code. The coding tool runs in your terminal on the same subscription.
  • Longer, multi-step tasks. The article says you can "Hand Claude work like reports, spreadsheets, and presentations, and it keeps going in the background."
  • Monthly API credits. Ultra includes credits for building on the Claude API.

The pricing page lists the same points in short form. Ultra is "Everything in Max, plus" no five-hour limit, 10x Pro usage every week, and API credits. The page describes Ultra as the plan "For your longest tasks."

The API credit amount doubled from Max. The pricing page lists "$200 a month in API credits, up from $100 on Max." A separate help article confirms $100 for Max and $200 for Ultra.

How Ultra plan usage limits work

The Ultra plan still has limits. They work differently from Pro and Max.

A weekly limit across all models. The help article says the Ultra plan "includes 10 times the Pro plan's usage every week." This limit covers every model you use.

No five-hour limit, once verified. Anthropic verifies Ultra accounts automatically, "using factors like your account and payment history." Until that happens, a temporary limit applies. Verifying your phone number at checkout is a separate step and does not remove it.

A separate weekly limit for Fable. Ultra plans have "a separate weekly limit for Fable." Another help article says Max and Ultra can use "up to 50% of your weekly usage limits on Fable models at no extra cost."

Shared across Claude and Claude Code. Usage in the Claude apps and in Claude Code counts against the same limits.

Other caps may apply. The article says Anthropic may limit usage "in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage, at our discretion."

To check whether your account is verified, go to Settings, then Usage. The help article explains: "If you don't see a Current session bar, your account is verified."

Weekly limits reset at a fixed time assigned to your account. The reset day does not depend on when you subscribed or when you start using Claude.

Ultra vs. Max vs. Pro

Here is how the three individual plans compare on Anthropic's pages, read November 5:

Pro Max Ultra
Price $17 per month with annual subscription ($200 billed up front), or $20 billed monthly $100 per month $200 per month
Billing Monthly or annual Monthly only Monthly only
Usage Baseline 5x Pro every five hours and every week 10x Pro every week
Five-hour limit Yes Yes No, for verified accounts
Fable models Paid with usage credits Up to half your weekly limit Up to half your weekly limit
Monthly API credits None $100 $200

The pricing page notes that "Prices shown don't include applicable tax." The help articles add that the listed prices are for web subscriptions. Mobile pricing may vary by app store.

The biggest practical gap is the five-hour window. On Pro and Max, a long session can stop when the five-hour limit runs out. On a verified Ultra account, only the weekly limit applies.

What stays the same between Max and Ultra

The rename changes limits, not features. Anthropic's pricing page has a feature table for Free, Pro, Max, and Ultra. Max and Ultra get the same features in every row.

Both plans include these tools for long deliverable work:

  • Claude Slides, Claude Docs, and Claude Design. These are on every plan, including Free.
  • Claude Dashboards (beta). This is on Pro, Max, and Ultra, but not Free.
  • Hand off and schedule tasks. Paid plans can schedule work for Claude to run later.
  • Research, Claude Code, and Claude in Chrome. These are listed for every paid plan.
  • Priority access at high traffic times. The table lists this for Max and Ultra only.

The table's "Models and usage" rows show where the plans differ. Pro is the 1x baseline. Max gets 5x every five hours and 5x every week. Ultra drops the five-hour row and gets 10x every week.

Team and Enterprise plans sit outside this change. The Ultra help article is about individual plans. It points organizations to the Team and Enterprise pages instead.

So the choice between Max and Ultra is about your work pattern. If your limits run out inside a single day, Ultra's missing five-hour window is the draw. If you run out late in the week, compare the weekly totals instead.

How billing and upgrades work

The help article covers several billing details.

  • Monthly only. "The Ultra plan is currently available as a monthly subscription only."
  • Upgrading from Max. Your account is charged on a prorated basis for the rest of your billing cycle.
  • Moving from annual Pro. If your remaining annual balance is larger than the Ultra price, you get an account credit. Your billing address must match your previous subscription.
  • Google Play subscribers. You pay the full new price on upgrade. The unused value becomes extra days on the new plan.

Anthropic also says it has no standing price reductions for individual plans. Its help articles point people who want a no-cost option to the Free plan, which anyone in a supported location can use.

What happens when you reach the weekly limit

A weekly limit can still run out on heavy weeks. Anthropic offers two ways to keep going.

Usage credits. Paid plans can turn on usage credits. When you reach a limit, your requests "switch to pay-as-you-go pricing on usage credits and keep working." Pricing follows standard API rates. Turning on credits does not move your reset times, according to the help article. Your weekly limit still resets on its usual day.

Limit resets. Anthropic sometimes gives eligible plans a reset. It sets your usage back to full right away. You use it from Settings, then Usage, on the web or in Claude Desktop. The help article says the "Reset for free" button is not yet available on mobile or in Claude Code.

There is one more detail for coding sessions. On Max, Claude Code can briefly finish a step after you hit a five-hour limit. The help article says verified Ultra accounts don't need this, since they have no five-hour limit.

Who should consider the Ultra plan

Ultra makes sense for a narrow group. Most people on Pro or Max will not need it.

People who run long tasks in one sitting. Reports, spreadsheets, and presentations can take many steps. The five-hour limit is the usual blocker for these long runs.

Heavy Claude Code users. A long coding session draws from the same limits as chat. Removing the five-hour window helps on long build days.

Builders who use the API. The $200 in monthly API credits can offset part of the plan price.

People who mostly chat. Pro or Max is likely enough. Check Settings, then Usage, for a few weeks before you upgrade.

Alternatives to the Claude Ultra plan

Other assistants have high-usage plans at similar prices. If your heavy use is mostly reports and slides, a task-focused tool may also fit. Prices come from each vendor's page on November 5.

Tool Top individual plan Price, per the vendor
Claude Ultra: 10x Pro usage every week, no five-hour limit when verified $200 per month
ChatGPT Pro: tiers at $100, $200, or $500 per month From $100/month
Gemini app Google AI Ultra: 5x higher usage limits than AI Pro From $99.99/mo
Powerdrill Bloom Pro: reports, slides, and sheets from data files Free plan; Pro $13.27/mo

ChatGPT Pro. OpenAI raised Pro limits recently. Its release notes from October 29 say "Pro 100 and Pro 500 plans now include twice their previous Work and Codex allowance."

Google AI Ultra. Google's plan page says it offers "5x higher usage limits in Gemini than the AI Pro plan." It also lists higher access to Gemini Agent in the US, in English only.

OpenAI is also changing how its limits work in December. Our guide to ChatGPT and Codex shared usage limits covers that change.

Where Powerdrill Bloom fits

If your long tasks are mostly reports, slides, and spreadsheets, a task-focused tool can carry part of the load. Powerdrill Bloom starts from Excel, CSV, or PDF files and returns analysis and finished deliverables.

The AI Report Generator page says, "Simply upload your data file, and let the AI do the rest." The Excel to PPT tool turns a spreadsheet into slides. For recurring work, Pro includes 20 scheduled tasks.

This split can lower your weekly load on Claude. Keep Claude for writing, research, and code. Move the monthly report or deck to a tool built for that job. The pricing page lists a Free plan at $0.00 and Pro at $13.27/mo.

Try Powerdrill Bloom with the report you rebuild most often.
