ChatGPT Intelligent UI: Interactive Visuals, Access, and Alternatives (2026)

Intelligent UI is a new way for ChatGPT to answer. Instead of text alone, a reply can include charts, diagrams, forms, buttons, and small tools you use inside the chat. OpenAI rolled it out with GPT-6 on October 7, 2026.
This guide explains what the feature does, which plans and models support it, and where it works. It also covers how to turn it down and which alternatives to compare. Every detail comes from OpenAI's help center and other vendors' pages, read on October 12, 2026.
What OpenAI released on October 7
OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes carry an entry dated October 7, 2026, titled "GPT-6 and Intelligent UI in ChatGPT." It opens with the core claim: "ChatGPT can now combine text, visuals, and interactive elements to fit your question."
The entry gives concrete examples. Answers can range "from side-by-side comparisons and diagrams to tools you can use directly in the conversation, such as calculators, bill splitters, and games."
ChatGPT decides the format on its own. The notes say it "can choose the format automatically, and still use a simple text answer when that works best." You do not need a special prompt to get a visual answer.
The release also changes how answers arrive. "GPT-6 can also begin answering while it continues to think or use tools, then add more findings without another prompt." In practice, you can start reading before the full answer is ready.
The rollout came in two waves. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise got it first in the Chat tab. The release notes say it "expands to Free and Go starting tomorrow," which means October 8.
What Intelligent UI does
OpenAI's help article gives a one-line definition. The feature "lets ChatGPT shape each answer with the right layout, visuals, and interactivity", directly in the conversation.
The model does the layout work. In OpenAI's words, "We've trained GPT-6 to compose responses using text, visuals, and interactive elements, choosing how they fit together based on your question."
The help article lists the building blocks: "graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts, and interactive experiences you can use directly in your conversation." It also explains how ChatGPT picks among them.
- Comparisons. "A comparison might work best side by side."
- Explanations. An explanation "might be easier to understand through an interactive diagram."
- Simple questions. When text is the most useful reply, ChatGPT still answers with text.
Some parts keep their state. The help article says checklists "can retain their state when you refresh the chat thread." State does not carry from one chat thread to another, though.
What interactive visuals look like in a real question
The examples OpenAI gives fall into four groups. The table maps each one to the kind of question that tends to trigger it.
| Element | What OpenAI's pages describe | A question that fits |
|---|---|---|
| Side-by-side comparison | A comparison laid out side by side | "Compare these three phone plans" |
| Interactive diagram | An explanation you can explore | "How does compound interest work?" |
| Small tool | Calculators, bill splitters, and games | "Split this dinner bill for five people" |
| Form or checklist | Tappable buttons, forms, and checklists | "Help me plan a packing list" |
These are everyday questions, which fits the rollout to every plan. OpenAI's models help page says "no special prompt is required." It also notes that "Changes to a conversation's appearance don't change your other chats."
There is no extra charge for the visuals. The same page says the feature "has no separate usage quota." Your existing model, tool, and plan allowances still apply.
Which plans and models support Intelligent UI
The feature runs on GPT-6, and the model depends on your plan. The release notes and the help article agree on the split below.
| ChatGPT plan | Model behind GPT-6 in Chat | Intelligent UI |
|---|---|---|
| Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise | GPT-6 Sol | Yes, from Instant through Extra High |
| Free and Go | GPT-6 Luna | Yes |
| Pro reasoning option | GPT-6 Astra | No |
The Astra line matters for heavy users. The help article says "The Pro reasoning option uses GPT-6 Astra and does not support Intelligent UI." If you pick Pro effort, answers come without these visual elements. Our explainer on GPT-6 Astra covers that model.
Enterprise access can differ. The release notes say "Enterprise availability depends on workspace admin settings."
One official page tells a different story for Free and Go. OpenAI's models help page, updated more recently, still names GPT-5.6 Luna as the default model for Free and Go users. The release notes and the Intelligent UI article both name GPT-6 Luna. If you are on a free plan, check the model menu on your own account.
For background on the two model names, see our guide to GPT-6 Sol and Luna.
Where it works and where it doesn't
The feature lives in one part of ChatGPT. The help article answers the common questions directly.
- Chat tab: Yes. "Intelligent UI is available in Chat, not in the Work tab."
- Work tab: No. The release notes add that "The models powering Work and Codex aren't changing with this release."
- Voice: No. "Intelligent UI is not available in Voice."
- Plugins: They keep working. The article names Gmail, Health, and Finance as examples.
Your app version matters too. The models help page says the features are rolling out "on the web and supported updated apps." It warns that "The older ChatGPT desktop apps for macOS and Windows do not support these capabilities; use ChatGPT on the web instead."
So if you see plain text where you expected a chart, check three things. Confirm you are in the Chat tab, on a supported app, and not using the Pro reasoning option.
How to control or turn down Intelligent UI
You can shape the format with Custom Instructions. OpenAI's examples are "keep answers concise" and "use tables when comparing options." You can also ask for a different style in a single chat.
To reduce the visuals overall, the help article describes a web setting. "Select Personalization → Layout and Visuals → Simple." It adds that this "reduces visual and interactive elements, though some may still appear."
The models help page describes the same control as a toggle named Layout and visuals. It is clear about the limit: "this setting does not switch the entire answer experience to a classic or text-only mode."
That gives you three levels of control:
- Per question. Ask for text only, or for a table, in the prompt itself.
- Per account. Add a standing preference in Custom Instructions.
- Overall. Switch the layout setting to Simple on the web.
Intelligent UI vs. ChatGPT data analysis charts
ChatGPT already made charts before this release, through its data analysis tool. The two features answer different needs, and it helps to know which one you are using.
Intelligent UI decides how an answer looks. It can add a chart or a diagram to explain an idea, compare options, or walk you through a concept.
Data analysis works on your files. OpenAI's help article says "ChatGPT can analyze uploaded files, answer questions about the data, and create tables or charts." For some tasks it writes and runs Python in "a stateful Jupyter notebook environment."
Data analysis charts have their own rules. The help article says "Interactive charts are supported for bar, line, pie, and scatter charts." Other chart types may come back as static images. You switch views with Switch to interactive chart or Switch to static chart.
The article also states its own limits. It says the Python environment "cannot make external web requests or API calls." If the analysis needs outside data, you upload it or connect a source first.
The practical rule is simple. Use Intelligent UI to understand an idea quickly. Use data analysis when the chart must come from your own numbers, and review the code before you rely on the result.
What this means for charts at work
Intelligent UI lowers the effort of getting a visual answer. A manager can ask a question and get a comparison or a diagram right in the chat, with no prompt tricks.
The visuals live in the conversation, though. OpenAI's help article says "State is not retained across chat threads." A checklist you filled in one chat starts fresh in the next one.
Three questions decide whether a chat visual is enough for the job:
- Does the number come from a file you own? If yes, use a tool that reads the file and shows its method.
- Will someone reuse it next month? If yes, keep the source data and the method, not just the picture.
- Does it go into a deck or a report? If yes, check every figure against the source before you share it.
For quick understanding, a chat visual is often all you need. For a recurring report, the source file and the method matter more than the layout.
ChatGPT Intelligent UI alternatives worth comparing
ChatGPT is not the only assistant that answers with visuals. The table compares what each vendor's pages describe.
| Option | What it produces | Where the data comes from | Plans the vendor lists |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Intelligent UI | Charts, diagrams, forms, and small tools inside the chat | The question and the conversation | All plans in the Chat tab |
| Gemini interactive simulations | Interactive visualizations and simulations in the Gemini app | The question you ask | All Google Workspace customers and eligible users |
| Claude Dashboards | Dashboards that stay current, with the query behind each chart | A connected data warehouse or app | Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, in beta |
| Powerdrill Bloom | Charts, reports, and slides from your files and data | Uploaded files, databases, and built-in open data | Free and paid plans |
Gemini interactive simulations. The Google Workspace Updates post from August 24, 2026, says Gemini can turn questions into "custom, interactive visualizations." You start by asking Gemini to "show me" or "help me visualize" a concept. Our explainer on Gemini interactive simulations covers the launch.
Claude Dashboards. Anthropic launched Claude Dashboards in beta on October 8, 2026. Its announcement says "Each chart shows the query behind it." The dashboard connects to platforms such as BigQuery, Databricks, or Snowflake. See Claude Dashboards and Motion for details.
The split is clear. Intelligent UI and Gemini simulations explain ideas in the chat. Claude Dashboards and Powerdrill Bloom start from company data.
Where a data-first workspace fits
Intelligent UI shapes the answer to a question. Many work charts start somewhere else: a sales export, a survey file, or a quarterly report. The chart then goes into a deck or a report that someone checks line by line.
That is the job Powerdrill Bloom is built around. Its homepage calls it "The AI data analyst that shows its work." It also promises that "Every number comes back with the page, the row and the figure behind it."
The plans spell out the outputs. The Powerdrill Bloom pricing page lists "Upload Excel, CSV, PDF, and docs" and "Generate insights, charts, and summaries" on the Free plan. Its paid plans list "Deep analysis, visualization, and reporting" and "Create slides, Office docs, Excel analysis, and Nano Banana images."
Charts can also become a shareable canvas. The AI Canvas page describes charts and summaries built from uploaded Excel or CSV files.
How to get the most from Intelligent UI
A few habits help you get useful visuals and avoid surprises:
- Ask for the comparison you need. Name the options and the factors, so the side-by-side view is useful.
- Say when you want text. Add "text only" to a prompt when you plan to paste the answer elsewhere.
- Check the numbers. Treat any chart in a chat answer as a draft until you confirm its figures.
- Use the right tool for files. For charts from your own data, upload the file and review the method.
If your chart has to stand up in a meeting, start from the source file. You can try Powerdrill Bloom on one of your own exports and compare it with a ChatGPT answer.
